I have been suffering from acne from the age of 11 and have been told to apply so many different ingredients onto my skin, from toothpaste to orange peel – so what actually works?
Let me tell you now never to put toothpaste onto a spot or your skin. Please, please keep that firmly to cleaning your teeth only! I have found many natural food ingredients that do help soothe and improve your skin, which I talk about in my other blogs and use to create bespoke products for my facial clients – but today I am looking at Aspirin and whether this is an ingredient worth trying.
I first heard about putting aspirin on spots about 2 years ago and was amazed that I had never come across it before. After trying so many things previously that did nothing but irritate I saw it crucial to research this further.
I found that Aspirin contains salicylic acid, an ingredient you will find in all your expensive anti-acne brands. Salicylic acid is used as an abrasion free exfoliator so it is a gentle way to remove dead skin cells on inflamed acne skins. It also helps to soften the skin, reduce swelling and redness and unclogs pores. All great benefits for a person who suffers from regular breakouts.
So I decided to give it a try. I will point out that if you are allergic to taking aspirin you should not be putting it on your skin but as I regularly take it I knew I should not have a reaction. If you are unsure, crush up an aspirin and make into a paste with some water and do a patch test behind your ear to see if you have a reaction.
I crushed up 2 aspirin and made into a paste and put it onto individual breakouts. I left the mixture there for about 10 minutes – 10 to 15 minutes is plenty for the first test – then I gently rinsed away with warm water. I saw a small initial reduction in redness and swelling that only got better with time. I did this every other day for a week and saw a huge improvement on areas of breakouts that would usually still be angry and red.
Here is a recipe for a rejuvenating aspirin facemask:
1tbs Natural live yoghurt
Blend all together and apply to clean skin leave for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water then be amazed at how calm and soft your skin looks.
